Tower Hamlets Signs Up to FilmApp as Filming Continues to Thrive in the Borough

Tower Hamlets Council has joined FilmApp, the UK’s most widely used film permitting system, further supporting the borough’s growing reputation as one of London’s busiest filming destinations. They are also now using LocationDB, which provides a powerful platform for production teams to easily discover and manage filming locations across the borough.

Tower Hamlets has become a major hub for film and television production, regularly hosting high-profile projects for platforms including NetflixApple TV+Disney+ and Sky. Productions are drawn to the borough’s distinctive mix of historic streets, modern skyscrapers, riverside locations and gritty urban estates.

Recent feature films shot in Tower Hamlets include Argylle (2024), where Matthew Vaughn filmed a complex SWAT team raid on Wapping High Street; Steve McQueen’s Apple TV+ drama Blitz (2024), which transformed Fournier Street, Wilkes Street and St John’s Churchyard into 1940s wartime London; and The Outrun (2024), starring Saoirse Ronan, which filmed on the Parkview Estate, Dorset Estate, Columbia Road Flower Market and Mile End Park.

Other major productions to film in the borough include Netflix’s The Beautiful Game (2024), the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black (2024), Marvel’s Kraven the Hunter (2023), and the Netflix action thriller Heart of Stone (2023), which filmed scenes in Victoria Park.

Tower Hamlets is also a regular backdrop for major television series. Paramount+ thriller The Agency used locations including Brick Lane and Wapping Pier, while ITV’s Trigger Point filmed scenes at Tobacco Dock Car Park and St George’s Estate. Other recent productions include Slow Horses, Bodies, Sweetpea, BBC Three’s Juice, Sky’s The Lovers, and earlier hits such as Top Boy and Killing Eve.

Several locations across the borough have become particularly popular with production teams. Tobacco Dock regularly hosts unit bases and large-scale shoots; and Victoria Park continues to provide a versatile setting for a wide range of productions.

By signing up to FilmApp, Tower Hamlets is making it easier for production teams to apply for permits and coordinate filming across the borough, helping ensure the area remains a welcoming and accessible destination for the UK’s screen industry.
