From Footwork to Framework: How Tech Is Transforming Location Scouting

13th January 2026

We were delighted to be featured in The Location Guide’s Spotlight Report “From Footwork to Framework – How Tech Is Transforming Location Scouting” which explores how technology is reshaping one of the most creative and essential roles in film and television.

Location scouting has always been about instinct, experience and creativity. What once required miles of travel, rolls of film, and long waits for prints, can now be done faster and more collaboratively, without losing the human touch. Technology helps scouts explore more locations, make informed decisions, and compress timelines, but the core skills of taste, judgement, and trust remain essential.

Virtual scouting, AI, and advanced databases, like our location database LocationDB, are enabling teams to shortlist locations with unprecedented speed and precision. Yet the responsibility of finding the perfect place – the location that truly brings the story to life – still rests firmly with the scout.

At FilmFixer, the UK film service company and sister organisation of LocationDB, decades of permitting data and location photography are now being unlocked through LocationDB.

“We’ve been collecting filming data for many years,” says FilmFixer chairman Andrew Pavord. “LocationDB helps us turn that knowledge into strong location ideas very quickly, saving productions time. Managing and searching thousands of locations has always been a challenge. LocationDB solves this by using AI to automatically organise, keyword and group large image archives together” Pavord adds.

Karen Everett, CEO and co-founder of Apply4 and FilmFixer, says the platform is already changing how teams work: “LocationDB is a real game changer. It helps people find better locations, faster. Users can search using text or reference images, and match sketches to locations, helping uncover both familiar and previously forgotten places. It’s especially useful when directors want something different.”

A key benefit of LocationDB is supporting film officers and agencies to stay on top of their location libraries. If someone new starts, you can’t expect them to know every location on the books. LocationDB ensures that valuable knowledge is easily accessible, keeping teams efficient and informed.

Despite the technology, creative control remains central. “This isn’t about replacing scouts,” Pavord explains. “It’s about collaborating more efficiently by putting more ideas on the table, faster.”

Our platform, LocationDB is designed to support this modern workflow. By providing access to rich location data, detailed archives, and smart search tools, LocationDB also helps film offices promote their locations, while location teams can discover new sites, match storyboards to locations and collaborate efficiently.

We were pleased to be part of this Spotlight Report, highlighting the role technology plays in modern location scouting. Please get in touch to find out more or to request a LocationDB demo, to see how technology can empower your location or location scouting process.
